Have you ever felt free from something you were oppressed with? That moment when that thing was taken away, you felt a gleam of light shining on your face. Lemme admit, “There is nothing as good as feeling free and not bound under any circumstance”. Today, I want to consider John 8:32, “and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”.
The Good News is, we have been made free by Christ. Now to be made free is not the same as to be set free. When you’re made free, the causative factor may not be taken away but then, it doesn’t harm or bother you in any way; you’re free from it. To be set free on the other hand is to be redeemed from the cause or for the cause to be taken away.
Lemme give one biblical example. Jesus’ work on the Cross cancelled the power of sin over our lives. Now we could say Jesus did not destroy sin completely on the Cross but gave us the power to overcome it. Being endued with the Holy Spirit, sin no longer has power/dominion over us. This is how we know that we have been made free from sin (the law) and not set free from it.
I cannot overemphasize this that the truth makes you free. Like they say, knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have, the more liberated you are because you’re not under the bounds of ignorance. It is good to know that all things have been given to us for our use, and that all things have been put under our charge. It is good to know that someone (i.e. The Son Of God) has paved the way to God for us, so we don’t need our deeds to merit heaven. When you know these, it frees you.
How funny it felt when I was told that my ‘spiritual experience’ was a sickness. It didn’t take the sickness away either but it made me look at it in a different way, in an introspective way trying to understand it. Now though I battle with this disease always, I feel relieved because I don’t have to deal with it spiritually anymore.
The truth sets free, the truth makes one free. Gone were the days when people searched for truth, they searched for it wherever they could until they found it. Their lives were never at ease until they found out the truth; it was the order of the day. Would you also search for truth? Would you also give your life to finding the truth so you can share it with the world?
My life has never been this at ease. Though I do not attend church, I still feel this peace all around me. Usually in a stance like this, you would feel deprived and depraved but not so with me. This is because I know one thing, that church is not where you go but who you are (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). I urge you to give your life to the truth, to Christ, and nothing will by any means be binding on you. God bless you.
